Guidelines
Individual Tracks:
Separate each stem to a stereo mix of multiple individual tracks, like a drum bus or a guitar bus.
No Master Bus Effects:Stems should be rendered without any effects applied on the master bus. Any effects applied to individual tracks or buses within the stem should be included.
Consistent Length:All stems should be the same length, corresponding to the full length of the song, ensuring they align correctly when imported into a mixing session.
File Format and Bit Depth:Uncompressed, lossless formats like WAV or AIFF are recommended, with a bit depth of 24 or 32-bit float.
Sample Rate:Use the same sample rate as the original mixing project.
Logical Naming:Use clear and consistent naming conventions for stems (e.g., "Kick," "Snare," "Bass," "Vocals").
Considerations for Effects:If using reverb or other effects on a stem, ensure those effects are included in the stem render.
Headroom:Ensure there's sufficient headroom (around -6dBFS) in the stems to allow for mixing and mastering.
Clipping:Do not export stems with digital clipping. Clipping results in distorted audio.
