Guidelines
Perfect your mix first
Make sure you're 100% happy with your mix. Mastering is the final polish, not a fix-it stage. Any issues in the mix will be amplified during mastering.
Listen to your mix on various systems (headphones, speakers, car stereo, etc.) to catch any inconsistencies.
Reference your mix against professionally produced tracks in the same genre to ensure your song is competitive.
Address technical problems like clicks, pops, or sibilance within your mix before sending it to mastering.
Prepare the audio file
Remove any limiters, compressors, or maximizers from your master bus.
Leave sufficient headroom in your mix, ideally peaking between -6dBFS and -10dBFS
Export your mix as a high-quality, lossless file such as WAV or AIFF.
Use the same sample rate as your mix session. Upsampling won't improve the quality.
Choose the highest available bit depth (24-bit or 32-bit float) for your export.
Turn off dithering as this is handled during the mastering process.
Don't normalize the final mix file.
Provide Essential Information
Include additional info:
Any specific instructions or preferences for the mastering engineer (e.g., desired loudness, tonal characteristics, or specific sound elements to focus on)
Information about the intended distribution format (e.g., CD, Vinyl, streaming) as different platforms have different requirements.
Clearly label your files with song title and version (if applicable) for easy identification.
Communicate any crossfade or spacing preferences between tracks, especially for albums.
Ask for clarification on any requirements if you are unsure.
